Imagine this scenario:
A small squirrel is reaching into a berry thicket, going for the juiciest bunch located in the middle. Just as it has its paw clamped around one of the berries, it notices that it's nothing but a furry ball. Before the squirrel can even think to run, from the middle of the thicket, a lithe creature springs, quickly dispatching its prey. The predator is a Fruit-Tailed Linsang; a master of cloaking itself in order to strike its prey.

About the species:
Fruit-Tailed Linsang are distant relatives of the Spotted Linsang found on Earth. Their bodies are mottled brown and black to allow them to blend in with branches and dappled sunlight. Their most renowned aspect, for which they are named, is that their tails grow fur shaped like fruits in order to attract small herbivores they can pounce on and dispatch for a meal. Depending on what biome they live in, the fruit on the end of their tails varies: berries in the grassland, apple-like fruits in the forest, and more tropical fruits such as mangoes in the rainforest. They're solitary creatures, but they raise their young until their tail fur is properly grown so they can lure animals in. To mask their scent, they roll around in fallen fruits on the ground which also provides a second layer of camouflage when they dangle their tails from their hiding place. Their fake fruits look very real, and it's only noticeable that they're made of fur when their prey touches them, which is usually too late.

For reference, here's an image of a Spotted Linsang; if you'd like to see more, there are tons in Google Images c:

Stages: (just concepts for what they look like; can be changed)

Alpha - appears similar to the spotted linsang, only with a much shorter tail and neck; its fur should be brownish.

Beta - similar to the previous stage, only with a slightly longer neck and tail; its body is elongated as well - there are small colored patches on its tail that differ according to the biome and what fruit they will look like.

Delta - still growing longer, and the colored parts on the tail are starting to puff out to look like fruits.

Omega - now a full-sized Linsang, with fur tufts on its tail that look like fruits growing on a branch - the fruit varies according to the biome.
